Apple crisp is hands-down the best fall dessert. I’ll take it over pie any day—I mean, I could honestly just eat the crumble alone and be happy. It’s all about that crunchy, sweet spiced topping that ties it all together. Plus, the whole thing just feels like the ultimate fall experience, from picking apples to baking them up and sharing with friends. Just the best way to wrap up a cozy day. And don’t forget that scoop of French vanilla ice cream—makes it perfect.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
5 cups apples (I use Macintosh red and Granny Smith)
1/2 lemon, juiced
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp ground ginger
3 tbsp sugar
FOR THE CRUMBLE
1 cup rolled oats
1 cup all purpose flour
1 cup brown sugar
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 cup butter, melted
INSTRUCTIONS
Prepare the Apples: Peel and cut the apples into small pieces. Add them to a saucepan along with lemon, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and 3 tablespoons of sugar. Mix well and bring the mixture to a slow heat. Simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples release their juices and the liquid thickens. Set aside.
Make the Crumble: In a medium bowl, combine all the crumble ingredients. Mix well using your hands or a fork until the ingredients are fully incorporated. The crumble should stick together when pressed.
Layer Line an 8x8 pan with parchment paper. Press half of the crumble mixture firmly into the bottom of the pan to create an even layer. Spread the apple mixture evenly on top. Sprinkle the remaining crumble over the apples, pressing down lightly to fully coat the surface.
Bake: Preheat your oven to 400°F and bake the dish for about 20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
Serve: Enjoy the apple crumble warm, ideally paired with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!
